Choosing the Right Outfitter
This is probably the most asked question we hear in the industry: How do you choose the right outfitter?
1. Know What Type of Hunt You're Looking For
Start narrowing down your list to outfitters who specialize in the type of hunt you're interested in.
2. While Visiting with Outfitters
- First Impressions
- Trust Your Gut
- Ask for References:
- Names
- Addresses
- Phone Numbers
- Randomly call a few references to get honest feedback.
3. Questions to Ask Previous Customers
Camp
- Where did you stay? (Motel, Lodge, Tent, etc.)
- Sleeping arrangements? (How many per room?)
- Were meals included and what were they like?
Guides
- How were they equipped? (Quality of rangefinders, binoculars, vehicles, etc.)
- Were they on time?
- Were they professional and respectful?
- How did they handle the animal after the kill?
- Did they take time to pose the animal for good photos?
Opportunities
- How many animals were seen?
- What was the size of the animal you harvested?
- What was the average size of animals taken on the hunt?
- What’s the success ratio of previous hunters?
4. Management Program
Keep in mind that a good management program does not necessarily mean a high fence. Look for:
- Age of harvested animals
- Ratio of male to female animals
- Feeding programs (not just corn feeders)
Final Thoughts
The number of outfitters is increasing every year, which expands hunting opportunities—but also makes the decision harder.
Remember: A paid hunt is not cheap. You can’t afford to waste your time or money. Be patient, ask questions, and most importantly—listen.
