BLACK BEAR HUNTING

The Black Bear is the most familiar and common bear of North America. They are excellent tree climbers, and typically live in forests, however, they are also found in mountains and swamps. Despite their name, black is not the only color of these bears. The Black Bear can also be blue-gray or blue-black, brown, or in very rare cases even white. The Black Bear size is usually 5 to 6 feet long, with a weight of 200 to 600 pounds.

ELK HUNTING

Elk are members of the Cervidae family. They have massive antlers and long legs with cloven hooves. The Cervidae family includes moose, deer, and caribou. Elk are not as enormous as the moose, yet they are larger than the deer in size. The Elk size typically between 4 to 5 feet from hoof to shoulder and weigh around 325 to 1100 lbs. However, the antlers on the elk make it a much taller-looking animal. The antlers on a male elk can grow up to 4 feet above its head, causing the elk to measure around 9 feet tall. Elk generally live in large herds such as 100+ members. The largest population of elk is typically found in North America. The elk prefers woodland, open mountains, coniferous swaps, aspen-hardwood forests, and coniferous-hardwood forests.

MULE DEER HUNTING

Mule deer are a symbol of West America deer. They rang as far as Alaska down to British Columbia. Mule deer are known for their large mule-like ears which generally are as long as three-quarters of the head. The mule deer has a unique black forehead or mask, yet they have a light grey face. Mule deer have a grayish-brown color and a white rump patch with a small whitetail that has a black tip. Mule deer weigh approximately around 120-290 lbs. The males are generally bigger animals than females. Sizing at around 3 to 3-1/2 ft tall at the shoulder, and 4 to 7 feet long.

Pronghorn Antelope Hunting

The Pronghorn name comes from the two distinguishing horns that sit upon their head. The horns are covered with a keratinous casing that covers the bone. The pronghorn has a color of reddish-brown with a white stomach, behind, parts of the facial area and throat are white as well. The pronghorn measure from 4-5 ft long from nose to tail, and around 3-4 ft tall. The males weigh around 80-150 pounds while the females weigh slightly less at about 70-110 pounds. The pronghorn antelope is famous for being the fastest land mammal in North America. They are mostly found in western and central North America. Pronghorns live on a diet of grass, vegetation, cacti, forbs, and shrubs. Due to these facts, they generally are found in grassland regions however they are sometimes found in deserts.

Turkey Hunting

There are six subspecies of turkeys, which are all native to North America. The most numerous of all turkeys are the eastern wild turkey, also known as the forest turkey. These turkeys were the ones hunted by the pilgrims and to this day they still cover the eastern half of the United States. The male turkeys (aka gobblers) weigh around 16 to 22 pounds on average while the females (aka hens) weigh slightly less at 8 to 12 pounds. The gobblers have a beard that reaches 6 inches or more of altered feathers on their breast. They also have sharp spurs on the legs for fighting. The hens don’t have beards or spurs however both genders have a snood which is a dangly appendage on the face. Both genders also have a few feathers on the head and a wattle which is a red dangly bit under the chin. Turkeys have around 5000 to 6000 feathers.

White-tail Deer Hunting

The name white-tailed is a reference to the white underside of the deer’s tail, which is shown when the deer senses its in danger. The white-tailed deer actually have a reddish-brown color coat in the summer which fades to grayish-brown in wintertime. Males deer are known as bucks which can easily be distinguished by their antlers. The male deer grows new antlers every year. The white-tailed deer is the smallest breed of deer in North America. They weigh around 100-310 Ibs. The white-tailed deer generally live in woodland areas; however, they can often be found around the borders of urban areas and farming counties.
